California Redwood Seeds
California redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) are also known as coastal redwoods. This California native giant conifer averages 200 to 240 feet tall with a trunk span reaching 10 to 15 feet wide. These trees live up to 2,000 years in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 8 through 10. Many of these giants are produced by a very tiny seed.
Redwood trees produce small 1/2- to 1 1/2-inch-long male and female cones on the same tree, but only the female cones bear seeds. Most cones contain 50 to 60 tiny seeds maturing within one year. The cones stay on the branches for years, but they open before dropping to the ground. The released seeds are scattered by the wind. The seeds are so tiny that it takes about 125,000 of them to make 1 pound.
Around 15 percent of redwood seeds are fertile, which is 15 out of 100 seeds. According to the National Park Service, the seeds produced by trees under 200 years old are infertile. Once the tree matures and is over 200 years old, it produces fertile seeds.
Seeds that fall in moist good-draining soil germinate quickly. The seedlings enjoy full to partial sun exposure with temperatures between 57 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer. The best soil is built up by river flooding along the banks of streams. Foggy conditions are ideal for the redwood seedlings, which need high humidity.
Once redwood seeds germinate they grow from a tiny seed to a 100-foot-tall giant within 50 years. Seedlings can grow 6 feet per year in ideal conditions. Growth slows as the trees near their mature size.
California redwood seeds have a backup reproduction method, because of the low germination rate of the seeds. Surface roots produce sprouts, which are genetic clones of the parent tree. These small trees rely on the parent tree’s roots for nutrients while growing. This process ensures the survival of the parent tree’s genetic material if the larger tree happens to die.
