Introduction: Cannabis Butter From Vaporizer Leftovers

Use the spent material from a vaporizer to create one cup of potent and versatile cannabis butter.

One needn’t throw away vaporizer leftovers. The heated plant material does not lose all of its potency in the vaporization process, and it’s easy to make use of those leftovers by dissolving the cannabinoids into a fatty mixture like oil or butter.

This recipe uses only butter, water, and ground marijuana. Potency will vary based on the strains that comprise the leftover vaporizer material, how spent the plant materials is (ie darkness of the roast), and individual tolerance level.

Check your local laws to determine if this project is legal where you live. I reside in Colorado, a state in which recreational marijuana has been legalized for adults over the age of eighteen. However, laws governing the sale, distribution, and use of marijuana vary by state as well as internationally. Use sound judgment, make good choices, and always use care when consuming edibles of unknown potency.

Step 1: Ingredients and Tools

  • (2) half-cup sticks of unsalted butter
  • (4) grams of vaporizer leftovers*
  • (1) gram of ground fresh cannabis
  • (3/4) cup of water
  • cheesecloth
  • stovetop range with a low heat setting
  • 1 quart saucepan
  • wire mesh strainer
  • 2-cup round dish
  • refrigerator

*Vaporizer leftovers vary in potency. A potent strain will yield more potent leftovers. The amount of heat applied from the vaporizer will determine how dark your roast looks: lighter color generally indicates that you’ll get more potency whereas a darker color indicates that you extracted the potency with the vaporizer and may need to supplement with additional leftovers or the addition of fresh herb.

Step 2: Mix, Heat, and Wait

  • Add the butter, ground herb, and water to the saucepan.
  • Set the burner to the lowest heat setting.
  • Set a timer for five or six hours, then wait.
  • Stir occasionally, making sure to scrape any errant bits of material from the sides of the pan.

The low heat setting ensures that you don’t inadvertently overheat the THC, thereby compromising its potency. Because THC is not water-soluble and the dried herbs float, the addition of water to the mixture is solely to float the ground herb away from the heat source.

Low and slow is the way to go to ensure that the THC bind with the lipids in the butter.

Step 3: Strain and Chill

After your mixture has simmered for several hours, it’s time to strain it to remove the solids from the mixture.

To do so, simply lay a square of cheesecloth over your mesh strainer. Secure the sides with one hand while pouring the mixture over the cheesecloth. The warm butter and water will pass through the cloth and mesh, leaving behind a buttery pile of damp solids. Use a spoon to squeeze out the remaining liquids, and you should end up with a dish of greenish-brown butterwater.

There may be some fine material in your cooling dish, and that’s okay. It’ll rinse off after the mixture separates and cools.

Let the mixture cool at room temperature, then cover it and pop the dish into the fridge for several hours to help the fats solidify. I recommend leaving it overnight to solidify. If you must hurry, do not use the freezer. Instead, fill a larger dish with cold water and place your smaller buttery dish into it to speed up the chilling process.

Step 4: Drain and Rinse

Behold the power of specific gravity!

You’ll notice that the fats all rose to the top of the dish, where they solidified into a puck of butter. The water settled to the bottom, and any tiny bits of floating herb floated above the water but below the butter.

To drain the water, I use a chopstick to poke a hole along one edge of the butter puck and another on the opposite side. Then simply pour the water out and discard it.

My butter puck has little brown bits of floating herb stuck to it. A quick rinse under cool water washes that right off, and you’re left with a clean batch of cannabutter.

Step 5: Finished Product

You should be left with just under 2 cups of clean, green cannabis butter.

Use it when baking, as a topping on toast, mixed into tea, or eat it plain. For the first few attempts at this recipe, pay close attention to the potency and use more or less vaporizer leftovers as needed.

Ingested marijuana takes longer to reach your bloodstream than vaporized marijuana. It can take anywhere from 30-90 minutes to feel the effects. If you have just eaten a heavy meal, it will take longer for the THC to reach your bloodstream. Conversely, if you haven’t eaten for several hours, the THC will hit your bloodstream faster. The psychoactive effect lasts longer when THC is ingested (up to eight hours) so don’t drive, operate heavy machinery, or hang out with your in-laws in the hours immediately following ingestion.

Now when it says simmer for 5 or 6 hours. What temp is that? Anyone got a bead on exact temp and exact time frame please answer.

1. 5-6 hours is overkill. After 1-2 hours all of the THC will be detached by heat and absorbed by the butter fat. Don’t waste your time with 6 hours of simmering. 2. This is an incredibly light dosage. Vaped marijuana only has around 20-30 percent THC content left. Personally if I were using two sticks of butter, I would add around a half to a full ounce of vaped weed. That would only be the equivalent of about 4.5 – 7 grams of fresh flower. 3. Make a little sachet out of the cheesecloth and tie the material inside. This will save you the straining step and probably some of the waste that goes along with pouring butter. 4. Water, water, water. This is a good water recommendation, usually about 2 parts fat, one part water. Once the butter is cooled and separated, melt down the butter and add water a second time. After this is cooled, melt it and add fresh water a third time. This will take more of the burnt taste out as well as remove almost all impurities. This is not as important with fresh flower as it is with vaporized. Hope this helps!

How-To: Make Edibles with Already Vaped Weed

Today I’m going to teach you an easy way to bring new life to your already vaped weed scraps. Yes, you can recycle your weed! Previously something you would have disposed, can give you a whole new high. Pretty much the closest thing to ganja wizardry. When you’re on a budget, getting two highs out of one bud is life-saving.


  • Half-Ounce of ‘Already Been Vaped’ Weed
  • 1/2 cup of Butter/ Oil of your preference (discussed below)
  • Cooktop
  • Medium-sized saucepan
  • Spatula / Mixing Utensil
  • Cheesecloth
  • One medium-sized plasticcontainer
  • Scale

If you’re curious about the science behind this idea of recycling your weed, the THC and all the other cannabinoids that make up your bud vaporize at different temperatures. Vaporizing doesn’t combust the cannabis, it essentially bakes it at a high temperature, leaving a lot of THC on the buds. You do have to make sure that when you’re vaporizing, you’re not at so high of a temperature that you’re left with no THC. If your leftover weed is turning black, your temperature is too high. It should be a light to dark brown.

Vaping is not only the healthiest way to consume our precious cannabinoids, it is also the most economical. With vaporizing, a little bit goes a very long way. You can also experiment with combining other healing herbs in your vaporizer to enhance your stash and make it last even longer. Keep an airtight glass jar next to your vaporizer and use it as your “ashtray” for all the vaporized herb.

The best part of cooking with weed that has already been vaped is that you get to skip the long process of activating your canna-butter. Since your flower has already been heated by its first round of vaporization, all of the cannabinoids are activated and ready to directly infuse. The recommendation is to still give it some heat and infuse your scraps in butter or oil, but in a pinch you could theoretically throw the already been vaped weed directly into your brownie mix. The only caveat to this method is that the taste might not be as good.

Okay, now let’s talk about the fun part — the options you have for infusion:

Canna-butter – Butter has been a long-time go-to for cannabis consumers because of its high fat content, it’s easy to infuse, and it makes everything taste freakin’ amazing. THC, CBD and all the other good-for-you things that are packed in our favorite flower attach to fat molecules, so our goal is to get butter with the highest fat content. To find the fat content just look at the saturated and unsaturated fat on the back of the package. I recommend to choose an unsalted butter with at least 7g of saturated fat.

Canna-Oil – Already-vaped weed can be infused into any kind of cooking oil, including olive, canola and my personal favorite, coconut. I haven’t yet tried avocado oil, but the more fat the better! Coconut has the highest saturated fat content with 12 grams of saturated fat, but olive oil and avocado are in the lead in the monounsaturated fats with 10 grams. Edible cocoa butter is also a great option for infusion as it has 8 grams of saturated fat and has arguably the best taste.

Both options for infusion are very versatile, and can be subbed into any recipe that calls for butter or oil. Don’t be afraid to think outside the “weed brownie box!” You can go the savory route with a stoned stir-fry, canna-buttered cornbread, or medicated mashed potatoes. The possibilities are endless.


  1. Weigh out a half-ounce of your Already Been Vaped weed (you can add less or more to adjust the strength of the final product)
  2. Create a tea bag out of cheesecloth holding all your ABV weed (this eliminates the need for straining). Place your THC teabag into an empty saucepan.
  3. Measure a 1/2 cup of butter or oil of your preference and add it to the saucepan with the ABV weed. If you’re using butter or coconut oil, you may want to melt it in the microwave first.
  4. Stir the butter/oil and the ABV weed together on low heat until the mixture begins to simmer.
  5. Simmer the mixture for a minimum of 20 minutes, stirring frequently. This ensures that your butter/oil is being infused to its maximum potential. If you have time to kill, feel free to leave your pan on low heat for a couple of hours.
  6. Once you feel satisfied with your infusion, remove from the stove.
  7. Squeeze all of the butter/oil out of the teabag filled with your ABV weed and discard. If you decided to mix your ABV in directly with your butter/oil, it’s now time to separate. Using cheesecloth, strain the butter/oil into a plastic container.This is easiest as a two person job, one holding the cheesecloth and one pouring out the pan. Squeeze all the remaining butter/oil out of the cheesecloth and into your bowl, and throw it away.
  8. Your infusion is now ready to use!

Sub your fresh canna butter or oil into any recipe, sweet or savory, and get creative. You don’t have to use it all at once either as it will keep in your fridge for a couple of weeks. It makes a great topping for toast in the morning before a stressful day.
