3 different ways to use a plastic bottle to smoke weed
Plastic is never an ideal piece of equipment in a process that requires heat, but sometimes we’re left with few choices, and it can work well in a pinch. There are even some things that you can do to reduce the risk, like introducing water to the equation to keep the plastic cooler, and to help you out, we’re going to explain the three best ways to make a DIY bong with a bottle.
1. The bottle pipe
The bottle pipe isn’t going to offer the smoothest hit on this list, but it also doesn’t require access to clean water, and it’s often the easiest piece to throw together for your first time learning how to make a bong.
- 1 plastic bottle (any size)
- 1 pair of scissors
- 1 piece of aluminum foil
- 1 toothpick
First, thoroughly wash the plastic then pat it dry to ensure that you aren’t inhaling anything that could be hazardous to your lungs.
Create a hole that should be close to the size of a loonie so that it works as the perfect bowl. Use a sharp pair of scissors to carefully remove a small circle of plastic from the lower half of the side of the bottle.
Now, get out your piece of aluminum foil and use your fingertips to mold it into a bowl shape by pressing it gently into the middle of the hole you’ve just cut.
Once you are satisfied with the depth of the bowl, it’s time to give the bong some airflow by using a toothpick to poke several tiny holes into the center of the aluminum foil.
Now, this DIY bong is ready to be used, just pack the bowl with cannabis, remove the cap from the bottle, spark it up, and draw in a long hit through the mouthpiece.
2. The gravity bong
A gravity bong works off the natural forces of the earth’s pull, to draw the thick cloud of cannabis smoke down into the depths on a chamber. The inside of that chamber is filled with water, and as the water empties, the bottle fills up with smoke, and this close contact with a cool liquid helps to provide you with a much smoother hit.
- 1 large plastic bottle
- 1 small plastic bottle with lid
- 1 piece of aluminum foil
- 1 toothpick
After washing the containers, you will need to figure out which one will act as the base of your bong, and which one will be the chamber that houses the smoke and rests in the water. Just bear in mind that the bottom will always be made from the largest plastic bottle.
Now, take a sharp pair of scissors and remove the top portion of the largest bottle, just below the line that represents where the label would rest. This should result in the perfect cup shape with sides that aren’t leaning inwards.
Next, you will need to remove the bottom of the smaller bottle. Only a small amount is needed at first, and once it’s gone, set the piece you’ve just cut into the large cup AKA bucket, and from there, trim down the smaller one so that the mouthpiece reaches just a bit above the sides.
The last functional piece that you need to shape is the bowl, which in this case, is housed inside of the smaller bottle cap. Take scissors or a lighter to cut or melt a hole into the middle of the lid. Try to avoid melting the threads, as they will be necessary once it’s time to use this DIY bong.
Take a piece of aluminum foil and gently mold it into a bowl shape before setting it into the hole that you’ve just made in the lid. Fold the edges of aluminum foil around the cap to create the ideal seal, and then use a toothpick to poke a few small holes into the middle of the bowl for airflow.
Screw the equipped bowl lid back onto the mouthpiece of the smaller bottle, and then fill the lower portion with cool, clean water approximately ¾ of the way.
Push the smaller bottle into the bucket to remove any extra air from the chamber, and just like that, the device is now ready to be used.
Pack the bowl, light it up with a heating element, and then once you see that the bud grind is smoldering, slowly and gently pull the smaller bottle upwards, which will slowly empty the chamber as it fills with potent cannabis smoke. Once all the water is gone, you can remove the lid and take the hit by re-submerging the chamber as you inhale from the mouthpiece.
3. The water bong
The water bong is a unique hybrid of the two other versions listed above, as it includes water, but doesn’t usually lead to as many spills, thanks to the water staying contained inside of the plastic bottle. This combination offers a supercooled smoke that is easier to take, and much more enjoyable than any dry bongs.
- 1 plastic bottle (any size)
- 1 pair of scissors
- 1 piece of aluminum
- 1 piece of rubber hose
- 1 toothpick
- Hot glue gun
The best way to begin is by washing any of the pieces you plan to use on this DIY bong.
Now the easiest way to proceed is to install the hole that will hold the rubber tube first, and much like the first bong, that opening should be located in the lower half of the side of the plastic bottle. Use a pair of scissors and carefully carve away at a hole until the rubber hose fits snugly inside.
Feed the hose into the bottle until the bottom of it rests approximately ½ inch away from the bottom.
Use a hot glue gun to seal up any openings that might allow air to escape around the rubber hose.
Next, you need to build a bowl, and like with the water bong, it’s located in the lid of the container. Use scissors or a lighter to create an opening that is large enough to accommodate a fair-sized bowl.
Now use a small amount of aluminum foil to create an indented bowl in the lid.
Fill the bottle with enough cold water to cover the opening of the rubber hose.
Replace the cap by screwing it into place, and now the device is locked and ready to be loaded up with your favorite strain of cannabis.
To use this DIY bong, all you need to do is pack the bowl, light it, then take your hit from the rubber hose that sticks out of the side of the bottle. As the smoke travels through a fresh bath of water, it will get cooled down, which is why this is often believed to be the best and most enjoyable way to smoke weed out of a plastic container.

What is a water bottle bong?
Far from embodying the braindead “stoner” stereotype, the cannabis community is actually quite ingenious—especially when it comes to throwing together makeshift smoking devices. The water bottle bong is one of the best examples of this ingenuity.
A water bottle bong is exactly what it sounds like: a bong fashioned out of an old water bottle. A water bottle bong should not be your primary smoking tool. In fact, it should probably not even be a piece you use more than once. Instead, a water bottle bong is a last-ditch effort when you find yourself in a pinch and have no other way to smoke. If you find yourself in this situation, making a water bottle bong will serve as a quick, easy, and incredibly effective solution. Here’s everything you need to know to build a water bottle bong from scratch.
What you need to build a water bottle bong
- A plastic water bottle. Use one of the standard 17-ounce bottles, and avoid the smaller ones. You can also use soda bottles, but you’ll want to wash out the sticky residue first.
- Scissors, razor blade, or a sharp knife
- A pen, marker, or highlighter that you don’t mind taking apart
- Aluminum foil, the thicker the better, or a small metal pipe bowl that can fit inside the cylindrical body of your pen, marker, or highlighter
- A needle or toothpick
- A lighter, match, or hemp wick
- Your favorite cannabis strain
Step-by-step instructions to build a water bottle bong
Step 1: Prepare the plastic bottle
Find a plastic water bottle; the standard 17-ounce size works best. If you can’t find a plastic water bottle, you can also use a soda bottle. Just be sure you take some extra time to clean the inside thoroughly — you don’t want all that sticky residue from the soda getting in the way of your smoking experience. Once you’ve got a clean bottle, remove the wrapper to make it easier to work with.
Step 2: Prepare the downstem
Next, you need to make a downstem that can house some sort of bowl. To make a downstem, you’ll need to use either a regular ballpoint pen, a marker, or a highlighter. A slightly fatter marker (think the fat Crayola Magic Markers) or a thicker highlighter tend to work the best, but a normal pen is doable, too. Take apart the pen, marker, or highlighter and remove all the insides; you only need the empty cylindrical body of the pen, marker or highlighter. This empty plastic tube will serve as your downstem. Now you need to pair your downstem with a bowl.
Step 3: Make a bowl
If you happen to have a metal pipe bowl on hand, see if it fits inside the plastic cylinder from your pen, marker, or highlighter. If it fits, you’re good to go.
If the metal pipe bowl doesn’t fit, or if you don’t have a metal pipe bowl handy, use aluminum foil. Tear off a medium to large piece of foil. Fold the foil over a couple of times to make it a bit thicker and more substantial. Now place the foil over the bottom end of the cylinder from your pen, marker, or highlighter. Fold the edges of the foil down to hold it in place. Next, use a fingertip to gently press down on the foil, creating a slight indentation without tearing the foil. Use a needle or toothpick to poke three to five tiny holes in the foil. This is the bowl that will hold your herb, so make sure the holes aren’t too big, otherwise your cannabis might fall through.
Step 4: Insert the downstem
Use either scissors, a razor blade, or a knife to cut a small hole in the side of the water bottle, roughly an inch or so below the midway point. You can also use a lighter to melt a hole into the bottle; just don’t breathe in the fumes. Make the hole barely big enough for your downstem to fit inside. Once you establish a fit, insert the downstem into the bottle, at a downward angle, so that it almost reaches the bottom of the bottle.
Step 5: Make a carb hole
Rotate the bottle 90° from the downstem and make another small hole in the side of the bottle, using whatever method you used in Step 4. This will be your carb hole, so be sure it’s in a position that will let you hold the bottle comfortably with your finger placed on top of this new opening.
Step 6: Add water
With the downstem inserted down into the bottle, hold the entire device upright and carefully pour in enough water to submerge the bottom of the downstem. Once the bottom of the downstem is underwater, you’re all set.
Step 7: Pack the bowl
Grind up your bud and gently pack it into your bowl. Insert the bowl into the downstem and get ready to smoke.
Step 8: Spark up
To smoke your water bottle bong, use the regular mouth of the bottle as your mouthpiece. Hold the bottle sideways with the downstem and bowl sticking up but away from your face. Place your thumb or finger over the carb hole. Use a lighter, match, or hemp wick to ignite the marijuana. Use your lungs to pull in through the mouthpiece. As you do, the smoke will get sucked down into the bottle and begin bubbling up through the water.
Step 9: Clear the bong
When you’re ready to take a hit, remove your thumb or finger from the carb hole and pull the smoke up through the bottle and into your lungs.
Why people smoke out of water bottle bongs
The only real reason people smoke out of water bottle bongs is because they have no other — or better — smoking device on hand. A water bottle bong is a stopgap solution, not a tool for regular repeated use. You should only make and smoke out of a water bottle bong when you’re in a pinch. Otherwise, use a real glass bong.
Why people avoid water bottle bongs
Water bottle bongs are not intended to be permanent, repeat-use smoking tools for several reasons. For starters, water bottle bongs are not all that sturdy; they’re simply handmade, thrown-together smoking tools. Further, smoking out of plastic and aluminum foil is far from ideal, especially since both substances can create highly toxic fumes when burned or melted.
Smoking out of a real glass bong will always be a better, safer, cleaner, and more enjoyable way to smoke cannabis, but when you have no other options, go ahead and have fun making a water bottle bong.
