The term eighth refers to the fact that it is an eighth of an ounce, but those savvy with measurements know one-eighth of an ounce is actually 3.543603875 grams. Yes, the industry rounds down.
With an eighth of weed, you’ll be able to roll two to three blunts or a handful of joints. Eighths are also known as a half-quarter or a slice.
A quarter of weed clocks in at 7 grams. A quarter-ounce of marijuana is enough for five to seven blunts and an arsenal of joints.

A quarter-pound is 113.4 grams, which also equals 4 ounces. Quarter-pounds are often called QP for short.
The next step up from the quarter-pound is a half-pound. Weighing at 226.8 grams, a half-pound, or 8 ounces of cannabis is also known as half-pack and half-pounder.
1 pound is equivalent to 453 grams or 16 ounces, enough to put a dent in the bank account. A pound can cost up to $3,000 and can be called a pack or an elbow.
Have you ever seen or heard the term “5-gram eighth” and wondered what it means? We just identified eighths as 3.5 grams so how can dispensaries rewrite the metric system and declare eighths to equal 5 grams? Just how much is a five-gram eighth?
Five-gram eighths describe the price point for the amount of cannabis. For instance, a customer who selects a 5-gram eighth will receive 5 grams of cannabis for the price of the strain’s eighth. Any “eighth” that’s more than 3.5 grams is basically describing bonus weed.
How do people around the world weigh weed?
Every country except Burma, Liberia, and the United States uses the metric system. With different units of measurements around the globe, how do other countries weigh their weed if they’re on a different system? Most of the world has adopted the metric system. The decimal system of measurement is known as the International System of Units (SI). In short, cannabis is measured by grams no matter where you go. Beyond grams, cannabis weights outside the U.S. are typically referred to in kilograms, or 1,000 grams. One kilo, as it is often called, is 2.20462 pounds.
Order like a local
Grams may be the universal weed measurement, but what we call cannabis changes based on your location.
Countries all over the world use different slang terms to refer to marijuana. So, if you want to shop like a local, it’s best to talk like one, too. In North America, cannabis is referred to as weed, reefer, marijuana, Mary Jane and a host of other words, while other parts of the world like Australia use slang terms like “hooch” and “choof.” People in Jamaica say “dagga.” And while you’re doing some research on ordering like a local in your vacation destination, check up on the laws and regulations before you go.

How much is an eighth of weed? Price, weight, photos, size, slang and more
This story is part of aВ series on legal marijuana, answering common questions about smoking, vapingВ andВ edibles.
Back when the idea ofВ marijuanaВ legalization was just a twinkle in some stoner’sВ eye, weed was commonly sold in “eighths” — and today, in legal dispensaries, things are much the same. But if you’re just getting started,В you may be wondering: What’s the price of an eighth of weed? What’s the weight of an eighth of weed? What’s the size, exactly? Or even:В An eighth of what?В Or:В What about the first seven?В And: Do I really have to do fractions?
Don’t fret. Weed lovers would never make anything needlessly complicated, and indeed, with enoughВ experience, an eighth will come to feel like an intuitively graspable measurement, like a tablespoon. For now, though, let’s start with the basics.
How much does an eighth of weedВ weigh?
While the size and density of an eighth of weed depends very much on the strain you’re buying, what never changes is the weight. Quite simply, an eighth weighs an eighth of an ounce — hence the term — which comes out to about 3.54 grams, if you’re metrically inclined, and often just a flat 3.5 grams, at least on the street.В In other words, it’s pretty light; by comparison, a nickel coin weighs exactly 5 grams.
What’s the size of an eighth of weed?
Cultivated cannabisВ is relatively light, so it can take a surprising number of buds to weigh out to an eighth of an ounce. Again, there’s a range, because some weed is fluffier and some is more packedВ together, but in general you can consider an eighth to be a decent pocketful, or enough to fill the bottom of aВ standard plastic sandwich bag.В В
Eighth of weed price:В How much does an eighth cost?
In states where marijuana is still illegal, dealer prices for an eighth can be somewhat unpredictable, depending on availability, riskВ and demand. Where the weed industry operates legally, things are more stable, though still variable.
Quality, of course, is the surest indicator of price. Top-shelf strains can fetch $60 or even $70 per eighth after taxes, though many would consider this too expensive. According to analysis by Perfect Price, for instance, the average price of a full ounce in OregonВ is $214, which puts an eighth at $26.75. California, with an average ounce price of $299, offers average eighths at $37.38 — more likely, you’ll pay an even $40. Of course, dispensaries also love to attract repeat business withВ deals, so you might run across a two-for-one special.В Other sellers advertise a “cap,” meaning they will not charge more than that amount for an eighth. If you see a place with a $35 cap, that’s a guarantee that their best weed costs $35 an eighth.В В
Eighth of weed slang:В What else is an eighth called?
The term “eighth” is fairly universal, especially where weed is sold legally, but people disposed to working with larger amounts may also say “half quarter.” On the black market, you’ll occasionally hearВ terms like “a slice” (because a slice of pizza is usuallyВ an eighth of the pie — get it?) and “a cut.” But by and large, “an eighth” is one of the most universally understood concepts in a weed culture that is more typically overrun with differences ofВ slang.В
How long will an eighth of weed last?
This is perhapsВ the most important (and by far mostВ subjective)В question that people face in managing weed quantities. An eighth is considered an ideal unit in part because it’s affordable, but also because you’re unlikely to smoke it all at once. That said, people have certainly rolled an entire eighth into a single blunt, whether for a group of friends or just to see if they could.
By another anecdotalВ estimation, an eighth is perfect “for 2-4 people lasting about a weekend rolling gram blunts.” And if you’re using a bong or bowl, those typically fit somewhere in the range of half a gram or less per use, which means an eighth could pack it eight to 10В times over.В
As always, your preferred method and rate ofВ smoking makes a difference.В For light smokers who bring outВ a one-hitter now and then, an eighth can easily last two weeks; habitual joint-smokers could burn through an eighth in just a couple of days.
At any rate, it’s the perfect amount for a first-timer to buy. Sure, you could play it safe with just a gram — but since you’re gonna like it,В you may as well save yourself that second visit to the weed store.В
