Home depot food grade bucket

I picked up a 5 gallon food grade bucket and lid from home depot, for fermenting 2.3 or 3 gal batches in. (Better size than the 6.5 gal bucket I got with my starter kit).

Just testing it out I found that the lid is very hard to snap in place, and that I now can’t get the dang lid off.

I read of others using these buckets so hoping someone can advise me.

The lid has the tear off strip which I am sure would allow the lid to come off, but my concern is that it looks like removing that strip will remove every second locking “tab” on the lid with it. And I’m not sure if the lid would then be able to close again with an air tight seal.

The bucket lid wrench works well, just go slowly around the lid with it, lifting a little at a time. I pulled too hard on one lid and broke the rim of the bucket. Home Depot sells the wrenches for around $5. They do not work on all lids, however, so try it first in the store.

I also have two screw on lids, but these are even harder to remove. When sealed tight I need a mallet to loosen them, and the ring part that attaches to the bucket is stuck forever. Maybe if I greased the threads with Vaseline, but I am afraid of contamination.

I always loosen my lids a day or two before bottling so any trub stirred up from struggling with the lid gets some time to re-settle.

  • How many inches to the gallon in 5 gallon bucket?

I saw a thread one time that said how many inches of water in a 5 gallon bucket = 1 gallon but can’t find it again? Does anyone know?

Re: How many inches to the gallon in 5 gallon bucket?

I’m sure it would differ with each bucket.

    All i know is that 2 gallons=apprx 6″ in 3or5 gal bucket.
Or just grab a 1 gal milk empty container, fill it with water and used the quantity as a reference.

Re: How many inches to the gallon in 5 gallon bucket?

Most 5 gallon buckets are all 15 inches tall. So do da maff.

This is assuming that all buckets are the segments of a column and not a cone. I have 5gal. buckets from home depot, lowes, walmart, pep boys, etc. and on several the grid guard only goes down halfway while on others it drops straight to the bottom.

Seems to me that volume should be volume but there are obviously variances in diameter. but for a rough approximation, one gallon is “approximately” three inches from the inside bottom. If I was measuring chemicals of any value, I would measure out eight cups of dried rice, beans, etc. and mark the line there to be much more precise.

Thanks guys! I’m just looking for something “close enough” for my HD wash bucket.

Re: How many inches to the gallon in 5 gallon bucket?

On a Home Depot or Autogeek buckets, I measure close to 2-inches per gallon. It seems fairly constant to 3 gallons (6-inches). The grit guard is 2 inches (1 gallon).

The markings on the Autogeek bucket read about 1 quart higher than actual.
