24 Hour Cannabutter Slow Cooker Method

Tired of hovering over a simmering pot constantly stirring your cannabutter? This cannabutter slow cooker method is easy to follow, takes next to no prep time and zero babysitting.

There are many ways to make cannabutter and this cannabutter slow cooker method is probably the easiest but this method lacks a decarb process which means some of the THC is left behind in the form of THCa (a non-psychoactive form of the drug found in raw marijuana).

I strongly recommend you also add a decarbing process before putting your cannabis in the slow cooker. You can always use AVB bud (Already Vaped Bud). I have included the decarbing method at the bottom of the article, it is not essential but will yield a much stronger cannabutter. Remember to start cooking the day before you want to use your cannabutter because this method takes 12-24 hours.

The cannabutter slow cooker method!

You can make cannabutter with any kind of cannabis, but if you’re going to make cannabutter you might as well make a decent batch with some high-quality cannabis. So source some top quality bud in advance.

For the cannabutter slow cooker method you will need to grind up one ounce of cannabis (around 30g), the finer the better. If you have a spare coffee grinder or herb grinder you can use that. (Just don’t put that grinder back into regular use afterwards. It might make for a fun morning but might not go down so well with your boss).

If you don’t have a grinder, get to work with a pair of scissors and a sharp knife. Once you have a fine grind toss it into your slow cooker with a cup of water and a pound of unsalted butter (around 450g). Turn your slow cooker to low, and whack the lid on. Leave it for at least 12 hours, but you can leave it up to 24 hours, the longer the better.

While you don’t technically need to stir this recipe, giving it a quick whirl whenever you are walking past will ensure that you get a good result and you can check if the pot is looking a little dry, you can add more water if need be.

When your butter has finished cooking (or you have finished waiting!) you’ll need a glass container to store it in, a strainer, and a layer of clean cloth like cheese cloth, or an old clean t-shirt. Pop the strainer over the glass container, line with fabric and pour the butter through it. Squeeze out all of the liquid and separate the herbs (don’t skip this step, there are heaps of cannabinoids in this liquid) and throw away the waste plant materials.

Place your butter in the fridge for a few hours. Once it has fully hardened you will be able to lift the butter out of the water. Discard the water and store the butter in a sealed container.

You’re ready to start cooking!

A word of warning, don’t microwave your butter to soften it, this will cause you to lose some of the cannabinoids you’ve worked so hard (or not so hard!) to collect.

Sounds trickier than I promised? It’s just a few quick steps: butter, buds and water in the slow cooker, strain and chill in the fridge. It takes a bit of time, but absolutely no effort!

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce of cannabis
  • 1 pound of unsalted butter
  • 1 cup of water

Tools

  • A slow cooker
  • Herb/Coffee grinder (optional)
  • Fine strainer
  • Cheese cloth (or old t-shirt)

Method

  • Grind up your cannabis with a herb grinder or coffee grinder, or finely dice it with scissors and a sharp knife.
  • Place all ingredients in the slow cooker
  • Cook on a low heat for 24 hours.
  • Stir occasionally and top up with water if the mix is looking dry.
  • Strain the mix through cheese cloth and strainer. Squeeze out the trapped cannabis and discard. *
  • Place the cannabutter in the fridge until it cools and hardens.

How to decarb cannabis

Decarb, decarbing or it’s correct term Decarboxylation is the process of heating your cannabis which causes a chemical reaction and starts to convert THCa into THC. The boiling temperature of THC is 314ºF which means if you heat your cannabis too much you will convert the THC to CBN or destroy it. THCa is the non-psychoactive form of the drug found in raw marijuana when heated it turns into the psychoactive drug we love THC.

Heating your cannabis to 240ºF for one hour is the recommend process for decarbing cannabis. This will prepare the cannabis for a more potent cannabutter. Place raw cannabis on a baking sheet on a baking tray and place it in an oven for one hour.

Making Cannabutter: To use water or not to use water?

Hello everyone of rollitup,

I have made cannabutter a few times first time with water and the second time without.

The first time I used regular unsalted butter and the second time I used coconut oil.

I felt it was easier without the water because I didn’t have to filter it and it I thought I had a better yield.

The second time I wrapped the material in cheesecloth and put it into a crockpot, where as the second time I put

the weed straight into the butter and filtered it afterwards.

I also have read that water absorbs the chlorophyll making it taste less “green”.

So I guess the question is to use water or not to use water?

Water makes it taste better. You can do multiple butter washes with hot water to get rid of the flavor completely and keep the effect. Only problem with this method is unsuspecting folks can get seriously trainwrecked if they do not know what is contained in what they are eating.

I think it’s good to do with water the first run but I don’t wash further after that. I prefer to keep some of the taste so that there is a reminder for unsuspecting folk.

I do not use water when making butter.

My method is to run the trim through the bubble bags then add the fresh bubble to melted butter and simmer it for an hour. I keep it between 180 and 190 degrees and I have never burnt any.
I then pour it into a rubber mold that has many 1 table spoon sized holes. Then into the freezer till solid. Each one is wrapped in foil and kept frozen until use.
I have had zero complaints and have a high demand for it since it actually has an amazing flavor! It will also give you the most wonderful body high for most of the day!

I have done the everclear thing also. I use it to clean my bubble bags. I once smoked some before it was all the way evaporated and got drunk! No lie, it was terrible that early in the day!

Now I want to make some ice cream with bubble hash!!

My question would be.

What do bubbles have to do with any of this?

The butter will absorb the THC in an hour at 190 degrees.

If you boil your trim a second time I would think you will have even more green to deal with.

I used a crock pot the first time I made butter. I let it simmer for 4 hours and had some of the greenest butter I have ever seen and it stank up the house. After the butter cooled I put it into a pot of fresh water and heated it again. After letting it cool again it was just a tad lighter green and still tasted like crap! It did work but there was no way I was eating that again! It reminded me of the cookie I got at the dispensary. Yuck!!
I tossed the whole pound (minus enough to make a cookie) of green butter in the trash and started over. Running the trim through the bubble bags takes less time than boiling trim in watery butter. One table spoon of fresh bubble in a pound of butter will give you the best flavor hands down and takes less than two hours to make. It will also knock your socks off.

Any how.. That is my method. Everyone I have given free samples to have asked for more.
