3 gallon pots home depot

Needles at Home Depot

Hard to believe, but at one of our Home Depots (near Fairfax Circle) they got in a load of Needle Palms — looked like about 2 gallon pots — for about $24 each. Pretty good price. We bought three! That said, it’s not the best time to be planting them. especially without some winter protection. Don’t know why they didn’t sell these in Spring. But then it’s Home Depot.

Howdy Dave, Check out my thread called “New Additions Trachycarpus Fortunei” for some pics.

I found Sabal Minor’s at the HD on S. Pickett. St in Alexandria. About 30 of them! They were in 3 gallon pots, 2-3 per pot, and many of them are producing the larger FAN leaves, not just the strap leaves, and were fairly large. $23.00 + tax.

I did get myself a great needle palm, but not at HD. Found it at Holly Woods & Vines nursery down south on U.S. 1 near ft belvoir in NoVa. Its fairly large too, producing lots of fan leaves, has about 6 “suckers” off the main stem, and was $70.26

Great finds! I think its interesting to see what stuff is going where to the HDs. Are the ones at the HD near you from “Morningstar Nursery?” Just wondering.

had sabal minors, jellys, windmills, needles, and one saw palmetto – oh yeah, and early in the season several mexican fans. with the exception of the mexican fan, they were very expensive – 10 gallon for $112 – and a couple of 15 gallons for $181. i really question the size of the palm for the size of the pot – but im no expert. i was able to talk the lady down to $70 for a 10 gallon jelly. they match the price of other stores in town and a local nursery had 5 gallon palms for $35.

Yes, from MorningStar. I’m definitely gonna have to check out ‘your’ Home Depot. Sounds like they get good stuff! Don’t buy them all up. Leave some for me. I’d like to get some larger minors yet.

We picked up a minor last night. Thanks for the heads-up. Yes, same company, same blue container. Interesting that ‘your’ Home Depot had S. minors, while ours had Needles. It was also interesting that in both locations they were placed under the ‘Houseplants’ sign.

U picked up a minor? So u came to the S. Pickett st.? Last nite? LOL! Or did u mean u picked up a needle last nite? Im confused! LOL!

No prob on the heads up. Im going back wednesday evening. If they have them under “houseplants” im going to talk to whoever I can to let them know that that mislabeling will cause them to DIE. They are NOT houseplants and probably would die inside a home.

What HD has the needles and how big? Can u post a pic of one of em?

Yes, we drove over to the S. Pickett St HD last night (we live just off Little River anyway, so it was not a long drive) and picked up one minor. It actually had three plants in it. There were a lot left — glad you did not buy them all! They were on a stand in their outside garden center area, but under a sign that said ‘House Plants’. However, the label ON each palm says “Cold Hardy Palms” along with the zone rating, so that should be enough for people in the know. I would never expect Home Depot stockers to know what they have!

‘Our’ HD that has the needles is near Fairfax Circle at 3201 Old Lee Highway, Fairfax, VA. They put their needles on a stand inside the store. They’re not getting any light there.

I may not get around to posting a photo of the Needles. They are in the same-sized (blue) pots as the minors, but are taller, like maybe a little over 2 feet high. There is a single large needle in each and most of them have 2 or 3 smaller pups developing. They’re really decent plants (for the price).

Ahhh gotcha! So you DID come to “MY” HD and pilfer “MY” needles! LOL! JK.

Ill have to see if I can get out to that HD. I used to live very close to FFX Circle, down off of Plantation Parkway ( across from FFX High School) but that was back in 2004. I HATED living out there, just because its too far out for me, not to mention its a good bit colder than where I am currently. Also its not as metro friendly.

How much were the Needles at that HD? Same price as the Sabal Minors?

And yeah, I would never expect that the stockers, or even most of the people who work in any of the big box home improvement type stores to ever really know too much about what they have.

I AM surprised at how low the price for those Sabal Minors were though, espeically since HD had some medium sized trachys this year but wanted 100 bucks for them. The ones they sold are the same size as the one I got for 49.99 at a little mom and pop place here in Alexandria.

Well have to keep track of one anothers plantings to see how they fair this winter. Are yours going in ground this year?

I got my S. Minor in, and my Needle is going in this weekend . Mine are in a great microclimate that pushes me well into zone 8B territory, so they should do fine. I just wonder if getting full sun for most of the day will affect them adversely though.
